CHENNAI: Private colleges need to introduce more courses in basic sciences and arts, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said here on Thursday.
He was speaking at the 17th College Day celebration of G.S.S. Jain College for Women.
“If all colleges offer merely job-oriented courses the future generations will not have diverse knowledge,” he said.
The Minister also said it was necessary for youngsters and colleges to foster the concept of equality amongst different groups and religions.
Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted how the status of women had improved in Tamil Nadu. “Women’s education is gaining much more importance; there is a revolution happening. Gone are the days when people perceived the role of a woman to bear children and tend to the hearth,” he said. He said in 1973 women were allowed into the forces and in 1989 the Tamil Nadu Government passed a law affirming the property rights of women. Their contribution in politics was also increasing and women were taking up positions in excess of 33 per cent, he said.
Mr. Stalin kept the audience of young women entertained with several anecdotes on women’s emancipation, pointing to leaders such as Periyar who had paved the way.
The 10th volume of the G.S.S. Jain College chronicle was released on the occasion.
Honorary Secretary of the college P. Gautam Vaid reminisced how the college was conceptualised for Jain girls, but had now grown to be one of the leading city colleges.
Principal M.K. Malathi highlighted the college’s achievements.
