The federal authorities in India's capital, Delhi, have asked a neighbouring state to submit samples of a dead chicken for bird flu tests.

The move follows reports that hundreds of chicken in Haryana state have died over the last few days.

The Haryana government had said the birds were dying because of intense cold and intestinal infections.

The eastern West Bengal state is already hit by a bird flu epidemic and culling of poultry birds is underway.

The H5N1 strain of bird flu is regarded as highly pathogenic and can also cause disease and death in humans.

The news of chicken deaths in Haryana has raised concerns in Delhi as the state is the biggest supplier of chicken to the national capital.

Despite fears that bird flu could get out of control in West Bengal, no cases of human infection have yet been reported.
